Reverend James Powell, Sr. has devoted his life to the ministry of Jesus Christ.  His pursuits for the Kingdom of God have been established through his steadfast and unmovable dedication to the Lord.

Reverend Powell has served in numerous capacities in the church.  He served for 25 years as a Sunday School Teacher, 20 years as a Deacon and 7 years as the Chairman of a Deacon Board.  He has also served as a Finance Chairman where he facilitated the development of the church's annual budget.  For the past 13 years, Reverend Powell and his lovely wife Johnell have served as facilitators in marriage enrichment, parenting,  financial seminars and Lay counseling including 2 years with the Fall Festival of Marriage in Ocean City, Maryland.

Reverend Powell has spent many years studying to show himself approved.  In 1958, he received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Mathematics and Teacher Training from Maryland State College.  During his term in the United States Air Force, he completed Teacher Training courses.  In 1974, he received a Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning and Community Development from the University of Colorado.  Following his call into the ministry he enrolled in Maple Springs Baptist Bible College and Seminary where he received a Masters Degree in Christian Counseling in 1994.

In February of 1995, Reverend Powell's God-ordained vision to strengthen families led him to plant the Christian Family Bapitst Church (CFBC) where he is currently the Pastor.  This church supports the family "wholistically" by focusing on family and individual  spiritual matters, relationships, stewardship and physical/health concerns.  In addition to serving in the pastorate role at CFBC he is also the Chairman of the Board/CEO of the Real Hope Initiative, CDC which facilitates support groups that assist individuals in emotional recovery from tornadoes and other crises situations.  He is also the Superintendent of the Real Hope Early Learning Center which is a daycare program for 2-4 year olds.  Since 1998, Reverend Powell has served as a Seminar Facilitator in Fort Washington, Maryland.

Reverend Powell is "on fire" for the Lord and also possesses a strong work ethic.  From 1958-1986, he served in the United States Air Force and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  From 1968-1969 he served as a United States Air Force Instructor where he taught courses on electronic warfare.  From 1969 - 1974 he served as a Motivational Training Instructor in Denver, Colorado.  While in Colorado he was involved in a church plant.  From 1975 - 1987 he served as the Federal Lands Manager where he developed policies for management of vacant public lands.  And, from 1998 - 2003, he served as Director of  Potomac Baptist Association's Church Planters Institute.

Reverend Powell is not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as he continually serves the Lord with vigor and tenacity.  He resides in Fort Washington, Maryland with his beautiful wife and they three beautiful and loving children.
